When thinking about sustainable travel, the first thought that comes to mind is camping, volunteering, and probably taking public transportation or not flying at all. Thankfully for all of us, that isn't completely accurate. Although these are a positive start, we all need to agree that international travel and flying will not disappear or stop suddenly. Also, I think we all need to agree that the travel bug will always be there.

A few of the most common questions I get asked as a travel advisor specializing in luxury travel with a focus on sustainability are:

-what does Travel sustainably mean?

- why should I care

-What would I get in return if I decided to take that route?

Sincerely, I think those are excellent questions that many people have. It wasn't until after the COVID-19 Pandemic that people started taking this kind of travel more seriously or that accommodation places, despite having sustainable practices in place, still wouldn't disclose just because people weren't asking for it.

Sustainable travel is becoming more popular by the day. This is because people are becoming more aware of how their actions impact the environment and other communities, but let's recap the basics.

What does sustainable tourism mean?

The UNWTO defines sustainable tourism as "tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and host communities". There are three key components to sustainable tourism: environmental sustainability (how does it affect the natural environment), social sustainability (how does it affect the communities), and economic viability (is it profitable and is it helping the people who run it).

This type of tourism can take many forms and includes thinking about your accommodations, food choices, tours and attractions, and transportation. When traveling sustainably, tourists often seek out local experiences and cultural immersion instead of large-scale tourist attractions. Farm-to-table or locally sourced dining is another way to support the cause, as it reduces your carbon footprint and supports the local economy.

Why is it critical for you to care for and change to sustainable travel?

1- It helps preserve our natural resources. By traveling sustainably, we can help reduce the demand for supplies like water and energy, which often come at a high environmental cost. You might be thinking, but big chain hotels already encourage me to reuse my towels. Think if that creates a big positive impact on their communities and their operations. Or are they still using massive amounts of water on their evergreen lawn in a place that probably shouldn't be grass at all? This is called greenwashing, which is a misleading marketing approach to make you believe that their efforts are sustainable when they really aren't.

2- It can create new economic opportunities for local communities. When travelers choose to support local businesses and services, it can boost the regional economy and create jobs. The money you spend on a locally owned hotel will promote business for the nearby farmer, artist, tour operator, etc.

Sustainable tourism should aim to benefit local communities without exploiting them. Properly executed, sustainable tourism has the potential to reduce poverty and improve the quality of life for residents in areas commonly visited by tourists.

3- It protects and conserves what we all want to experience and see! Call it Ancient cities, wild tigers or elephants in Asia; Gorillas in Rwanda; the Amazon forest in South America; Venice, Rome, and other beautiful towns in Europe. Have you seen Instagram vs reality videos online? That's what I mean. Over-tourism can destroy a place in many ways. From people losing their jobs during the low season to overused trails in ancient locations, etc.

And now the juicy part, what do you get in return if you decide to take a more conscious approach to travel?

I feel this is one of the most significant questions. Many people think that if they choose this type of tourism we will suggest you try camping, or perhaps take a bus, but that is not correct. Thankfully, small luxury hotels, boutique hotels, haciendas, lodges, and glamping can meet and exceed even the highest of luxury standards. Tour operators are changing the type of transportation they use for touring to cleaner options; choosing to book a local tour, instead of having to travel to a neighboring community can make a big difference as well, without compromising the quality of the tour. You just need to look for it or have your travel advisor look for it.

1-Choosing a shoulder season to travel will give you all the benefits of High Season travel but with fewer crowds. And you may even get a better price on your travel package! No lines, and no crowded sightseeing places…enjoy a picture without dozens of people behind you.

2- Better accommodation choices. For example, there is a high chance that a lot of people decide to travel to Costa Rica during the winter months in the USA for various reasons: holidays, school vacations, it's too cold up here, etc. But this season coincides with Costa Rica's summer break. That means tourists and locals go to the same places at the same time. Availability is low, and prices are high. Choosing a different time to travel will improve your chances of getting the suite you have been dreaming of.

3- Furthermore, you may even get the opportunity to witness rare species of animals and birds in their natural habitat. More people on the trails means animals get scared and hide away.

4-Personalized attention at any location. When a location has fewer people to take care of, they will have more time to interact with you. This translates into you having the chance to immerse yourself more in their daily lives, and culture and perhaps learn a little more from them.

How to become a more sustainable traveler?

Your choices are your most powerful tools. Always remember to leave the place you are visiting in the same or better condition as you found it. Keep in mind that you don't have to commit all-in on your first try. Small changes can make a big difference and you will learn along the way.

Sustainable destinations are not only environmentally friendly but also have lots of options for you to be part of the change. With that in mind, start small and be consistent. With your commitment, you will not only be helping the environment but also become part of the wider effort to make a positive change. Gorgeous scenic views and natural wonders aren't the only aspects to consider.

Take part in local cultural events and learn how to cook a local meal to share with your friends. Perhaps take a language lesson and visit the market for that handmade souvenir to hang on your wall or later wear.

There are many ways to incorporate sustainable practices into your travels, no matter what type of vacation you're planning. From choosing eco-friendly accommodation to offsetting your carbon footprint, seek out local tour operators and guides who can show visitors the area in a way that respects its culture and history. Making an effort to change the way you travel can create a big impact no matter if you choose to stay local or adventure internationally. With mindful planning and an openness to learning, your travels can not only create positive memories but also help to promote sustainability and respect for the environment.

By making conscious decisions about your travel habits, you can create a ripple effect and make a difference in the world, no matter where you go. Take a further step and explore our list of sustainable destinations for an eco-friendly experience!
